A prominent provider of services to individuals with developmental disabilities in Onondaga County, New York, collaborated with Research and Marketing Strategies, Inc. (RMS) to conduct an extensive community needs assessment. The objective was to gain valuable insights that would enable the company to efficiently provide support and serve its members, caretakers, and staff.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The study was designed to understand and address the needs of the organization’s stakeholders who rely on the organization for support, guidance, and essential services.

The specific objectives of the study included:

  • Identifying the ways in which members require assistance, as well as gaps in the services currently offered;
  • Assess the effectiveness of the existing services;
  • Evaluate members’ awareness of the available services;
  • Gauge the organization’s comparative position in the market; and
  • Identify opportunities to optimize the delivery of services.

METHODOLOGY: MIXED MODE SURVEY

  • RMS designed, conducted, and managed a 10–12-minute mixed-mode survey, combining online and telephone methodologies. The survey included multiple-choice, Likert scale, and open-ended questions.
  • RMS gathered feedback from over 300 participants using a contact list provided by the organization, which included members, caretakers, employees, and donors.
  • The study primarily focused on understanding stakeholders’ familiarity with services, their level of satisfaction, and their evolving needs.

IMPACT

The findings of the study suggested that individuals were largely satisfied with the services provided by the organization, but for certain services (respite, for instance), they desired more developmentally appropriate activities. RMS made suggestions to the organization that included targeted outreach efforts for fund and donor development, as well as fostering relationships to receive referrals for services.
